Senior Ida Ayu Indira Melati Putri became the ninth Big Ten Champion in Purdue women’s golf history Sunday, shooting a final-round, five-under 67 to top the field and lead the Boilermakers to a second-place team finish at TPC River’s Bend. The Boilermakers turn in their best team finish at the conference championships since 2013, while Putri is the second Boilermaker in the last four seasons to secure medalist honors.
Putri shared the conference crown with Ohio State’s Nikolette Schroeder, who shot six-under 66 in the final round to match the Boilermaker senior’s two-round total of six-under 138. Putri’s 67 is a career-best performance for the team’s lone senior and tied a Purdue single-season record as her sixth round in the 60’s this season. Her 138 is also Purdue’s best-ever 36-hole tournament score as the conference championship was shortened a round due to unplayable course conditions Saturday.
Ohio State claimed conference championship honors at one-under 575, securing the top spot by three strokes over Purdue, Indiana and Illinois.
Putri made four birdies and an eagle Sunday, dropping three birdies on the front side and shooting three-under par on the back nine, including the eagle on No. 11, which gave her a two-shot lead on the field going down the stretch. Her final birdie came on No. 16, and then she made par on the final two holes to hold the lead as the final groups finished out the round. Schroeder had to make birdie on No. 17 to catch Putri, and then made par on the 18th and final hole to share the title.
Sophomore Inez Wanamarta made sure Putri wasn’t the only Boilermaker in the 60’s on Sunday, making four birdies on her way to a three-under 69. Like Putri, Wanamarta played a pristine back nine with eight pars and a birdie on No. 15.
Freshman Danielle du Toit posted a strong finish, making birdie on three of her final five holes to finish even par, while junior Micaela Farah logged the fourth team score, sinking a pair of birdies on her way to a one-over 73.
Wanamarta posted her fifth top-20 finish of the season, tying for 18th place, while Du Toit tied for 22nd and Guan tied for 24th.
The Boilermakers await word of an NCAA Regional Championship appearance and will play at 1-of-4 locations, each featuring an 18-team field with the top six qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The four regional locations for 2019 will be hosted by Auburn, Michigan State, Oklahoma and Washington.
