Fuel Acquire Goaltender Gordon Defiel from South Carolina

The Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks and AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, announced Monday that they have acquired goaltender Gordon Defiel in a trade with the South Carolina Stingrays in exchange for future considerations.

Defiel, 25, holds a 6-6-0 record alongside a 2.77 goals against average and a .913 save percentage in 14 appearances with the Stingrays this season. The 6-foot, 197-pound netminder picked up wins in four straight starts from Dec. 9 to Dec. 21, before making a career-high 49 saves during a 4-1 victory over the Worcester Railers on Jan. 4. A native of Stillwater, Minn., Defiel started the 2018-19 season with the Macon Mayhem in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), posting a 3-0-0 record, a 1.33 goals against average and a .952 save percentage before joining South Carolina on loan in early November.

Last season Defiel finished among the SPHL’s top five goaltenders in both goals against average (2nd, 2.61) and save percentage (T-4th, .911), posting a 13-5-3 record with one shutout in 22 games with the Pensacola Ice Flyers. The rookie earned league Player of the Month honors in December of 2017, after posting an 8-0-1 record and earning his first ECHL call-up to the Orlando Solar Bears.

Prior to turning pro, Defiel spent three seasons with Lake Superior State University, finishing his collegiate career with a 30-55-12 record, a 3.18 goals against average and a .914 save percentage.
